Too often I find putting my daughter to bed a chore. I find waiting for her to fall asleep excruciating. It’s like torture; being trapped by her side thinking about all the things I’m missing out on or all the things I could be doing.

It’s really not that bad, it takes 1000305_10153121349465265_1983046406_nher a few minutes to settle down and then maybe ten minutes more to drift off into a nice deep sleep. I’m just a bit of a busy body……

Until this challenge!

It started on week #2 when I started doing my breathing exercises at nap time and then again at bed time. Then week #3 I started to become more mindful of my body sensations and the noises I could hear as I lay beside her.

This week – practicing presence – I really started to enjoy the time; this ritual that we have. I realized that by focusing on all the things that I ‘could’ be doing I was missing out on what I ‘was’ doing. Bonding with my precious daughter, soothing her into sleep, breathing in the sweet smell of her and appreciating this time in her life. A time that I know passes quickly enough without me wishing it away.

Today I took this picture after I shed a tear for all the times I’d missed out on because I was ruminating on my to-do list. I learned that I when I allow myself to relax into these small moments in time that I find extreme joy.
